Artist Statement
The experiences and memories we accumulate throughout our lives profoundly influence the way we think, perceive the world, and interact with our environment. I create cast metal sculptures that capture the essence of the memories, experiences, and cultures that have shaped my identity.
My interest in understanding memory is deeply personal, stemming from a history of Alzheimer’s in my family. Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent form of dementia, significantly impacts memory, cognition, and behavior. This personal connection prompted me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with a keen focus on how memories are formed, stored, and eventually lost. One fundamental concept I discovered was the importance of repetition; recounting a story serves to solidify that memory into long-term storage. My sculptures provide a way for me to reflect on my childhood.
Through metalwork, I experiment with gestures, textures, colors, and various metal combinations to reinterpret a memory. I incorporate penguins into my art as a way to represent my own identity. While many associate penguins with the icy Arctic, it’s intriguing to note that most species thrive in warm, tropical climates near the beach. Additionally, penguins symbolize adaptability and resilience.
