Artist Statement - Liz Hanson
The experiences and memories we gather throughout our lives profoundly shape our thoughts, perceptions, and interactions with the world around us. I design cast metal sculptures that embody the essence of the memories, experiences, and cultures that have influenced my identity.
Through metalworking, I explore gestures, textures, colors, and various metal combinations to reinterpret a memory. Penguins are prominently featured in my artwork as a representation of my identity, symbolizing adaptability and resilience.
My work centers on the dynamic interplay of opposing forces. The art I create employs inclusions—a casting technique that involves mixing elements during the process—to unify objects by layering metal over another metal or object. This method strengthens the connection, allowing the weaker element to adopt the characteristics of the stronger, resulting in a harmonious new material.
